9 critical thinking strategies you can actually use
Critical thinking isn't a personality trait — it's a set of moves you can practice. These nine are the ones that hold up under real pressure: in arguments, in decisions, and in the moments where being wrong is expensive.
Say the claim out loud in one sentence
Most weak thinking hides in vague wording. If you can't state your belief in a single plain sentence, you don't have a belief yet — you have a mood.
Separate the fact from the story
Write what actually happened, then write what you concluded from it. The gap between those two lines is where most mistakes live.
Steelman the other side first
Argue the opposing view so well that someone who holds it would nod. If you can't, you're arguing with a cartoon, not a person.
Ask what would change your mind
Name the specific evidence that would make you drop the belief. If nothing would, it's an identity, not a conclusion.
Check the base rate
Before trusting a vivid example, ask how often this happens in general. Stories are memorable; frequencies are true.
Follow the incentive
Ask who benefits if you believe this — including you. Incentives don't prove someone wrong, but they tell you where to look harder.
Run the idea forward three steps
"And then what?" three times in a row kills more bad plans than any amount of analysis. Second-order effects are where plans break.
Look for the missing option
Most decisions are framed as A or B. The best answer is usually C — the one nobody put on the table because it wasn't offered.
Write the post-mortem before you start
Imagine it's six months later and this failed. Explain why. You'll surface risks you'd never admit while you're still excited.
How to practise these
Reading strategies changes nothing. Applying them under resistance does. Pick one belief you hold strongly, bring it into the arena, and choose a perspective — Scientist, Founder, Skeptic — that will push back on it. You'll get five rounds of pressure and a reflection report showing where your reasoning held and where it cracked.
